Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
“Don’t bunt. Aim out of the ball park. Aim for the company of immortals.”
- David Ogilvy
This is an interesting quote, and I appreciate its message, but I have to violently disagree. Maybe its my background in baseball, maybe not. The fantastic thing about bunting isn’t just getting on base, or advancing a runner, although a suicide bunt is actually fantastically exciting, and stressful. But what bunting does, and I mean drag bunting, and suicide bunting, and well… any sort of bunting which is well executed and part of a good strategy, is throw off the other team. Even the best pitcher can be flustered, a third baseman can lose his cool, a team can be rocked out of its groove by a simple, and perceptively “tiny” maneuver. Its one where you’ll never hit a ball out of the ball-park, but you can tear the foundation out from under a team much more effectively than you can with a home-run. Why? Its because a bunt is an induced failure which is highly visible, while a home-run is something you can’t do much to prevent.
Just some random thoughts.
